After 13-year-old Ben Barrett (Brandon Tyler Russell) gets into trouble with the law again, his struggling, single mother (Mira Sorvino) sends Ben to Iowa to spend the summer on a farm with his tough grandfather, Jack (Peter Fonda). to help Ben get a friend, Jack takes him to the dog pound, where Ben meets Smitty, a lovable mutt htt was left behind by his owners. Between the dog and a friendly neighbor (Louis Gossett, Jr.), Ben soon learns life lessons about friendship, family, and responsibility.
